A Bassinet Versus A Crib – Which is Better for My Baby?

When you first give birth to your new bundle of joy and you bring him or her home for the first time, you need to give some pre-thought to which sleeping arrangement you’re going to go for. Generally speaking, the two choices you have are either a bassinet or a crib.

Which is better for your baby?

This is an entirely personal choice, one which is made with your baby in mind, his or her preferences, and your budget available at the same time.

So, which is better for your baby? A bassinet or a crib?

Let’s explore a little further.

Bassinet

The great thing about a bassinet is that it is portable, which means you move it from room to room, depending on where you are wanting to be, i.e. sleeping in the bedroom, watching TV in the living room, in the dining room etc. This means you can keep an eye on your baby at all times. There are also many added extras you can have with a bassinet, which do a great job of helping soothe baby to sleep, such as a rocking motion, a built-in music player, or a mobile. Another advantage is that the smaller size of a bassinet means that it won’t take up so much room in your house.

The downsides? A bassinet will only last you six months maximum, because your baby will outgrow it by this time, if not before; for this reason you may feel that the expenditure of a bassinet is too much for the amount of time you’re actually going to be using it. Some babies also don’t settle so well in a bassinet, but that is down to the personality of your baby when making that decision.

Crib

A crib is the traditional way for your baby to sleep, also known as a cot. These often have sides which drop down, which make it easy for you to place the baby inside, especially if you are returning home after having a C section, and when bending and lifting is difficult. It’s also worth bearing in mind however that not all cribs have this feature, so perhaps look for this when you are shopping around.

You can find cribs within many different price ranges, so it’s not something you will struggle to find, and they can be used for much longer, compared to a bassinet which is only going to manage you for around six months at the most. It’s for this reason that a crib is probably the more cost effective choice.

The downsides are that a crib isn’t mobile, it has to be fixed in one room, i.e. a nursery, and they can be large and bulky, so they can take up quite a lot of space within that one room.

Ultimately, as with most things related to your baby, it is a personal choice which fits in with your circumstances, budget, and how your baby settles.
